German Is Not One Market
German is spoken as a first language in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and it is also used in Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the German-speaking community of Belgium and South Tyrol in Italy. The vocabulary shifts across these borders. An Austrian shopper searches for "Marille," while a German one types "Aprikose." Swiss German writing drops the "ß" entirely and uses "ss," so "Straße" becomes "Strasse." Prices, currencies, delivery terms and even the months of the year ("Jänner" in Austria) can differ. One generic German page can rank in all three countries, but it rarely converts well in all three.
Compound Nouns Change Keyword Research
German builds long words by joining shorter ones. Someone looking for legal expenses insurance might type "Rechtsschutzversicherung," "Rechtsschutz Versicherung" or "Versicherung Rechtsschutz Vergleich," and the results pages for those variants do not always match. Translating an English keyword list misses these patterns completely. Good German keyword research tests the joined form, the split form and the natural long-tail phrasing to find the version that actually brings in traffic.
"Sie" or "du": Tone Is a Ranking and Conversion Decision
German has a formal "you" (Sie) and an informal "you" (du). B2B, finance, legal and healthcare audiences generally expect "Sie." Fashion, gaming, fitness and many startup brands use "du." Mixing the two on one site, or picking the wrong one, reads as careless to a native speaker. That hurts engagement, and engagement is a signal search engines watch.
Search Engines Behave Differently Here
Google leads in Germany, but it leads by a smaller margin than in India or the USA. Bing holds a noticeably larger share, driven by Windows, Edge and Copilot, and privacy-focused engines such as Ecosia and DuckDuckGo have loyal users. Google's AI Mode has also been live in German across Germany, Austria and Switzerland since October 2025. A German SEO plan that ignores Bing Webmaster Tools and AI answer visibility leaves traffic on the table.
